Haircare for the Modern Gent

Monday, 15 July 2013

Haircare is probably the longest standing part of man’s newfound metrosexuality. Even the man who says he doesn’t care about how he looks will have a particular way he likes his hair. This is exactly why Brylcreem has managed to stay around for 85 years and why men’s hair styling products were the first to be advertised constantly on TV. Due to this, I thought it was only right to show you my selection of hair styling products and why I use them.

First, a bit of background knowledge…

My hair is ridiculously thick, hard to control and normally when it is controlled, it won’t last longer than half an hour. This has led to a lot of time trying out different and new products to try and tame the beast. These are the four products that have passed the tests.
VO5 Mega Hold - Gel Spray and Styling Gel
When it comes to haircare, my problem is that once I've done my hair, it won't stay that way for long. VO5 has been my answer to this issue, all I have to do is style my hair and then spray is with the Mega Hold Gel Spray (1) and I'm sorted for the day. It has survived long days at work, long nights out and even heavy rain.

I tend to reserve the Mega Hold Styling Gel (2) for when I go out as combining these two will essentially cement my hair into position (which just so happens to be perfect for sweaty club conditions). Surprisingly they both wash out easily too.

Use: Daily/When needed

Prices: Gel Spray - £2.99 (Boots)
Styling Gel - £2.99 (Boots)
Garnier Fructis Style - Explosive Putty
This was my staple styling product for a long time. Combined with the VO5 Gel Spray it created a long-lasting hold that was easy to style and if I'm honest, the smell makes it tempting to eat. I don't use it that often any more as I've now got shorter hair that I tend to just pull back or to the side. But I'd certainly recommend it to anyone looking to add a bit of flare to their hair.

Use: Daily

Price: £2 (ASDA)

Brylcreem
Is there any explanation needed? It's Brylcreem. To paraphrase Forest Gump - 'Brylcreem is as Brylcreem does'. I admit that it's not perfect for thick hair as it's a light hold. However, it styles my hair perfectly and then I can just add the VO5 Gel Spray to finish. Although when my hair is still short, Brylcreem is genuinely perfect.

Use: Every day

Price: £3.36 £2.84 (Chemist Direct)
Cheers guys,
O&U.
