Copenhagen in Photographs

Sunday, 21 August 2016

Bored on the Saturday before my graduation, after dangerously deciding to treat myself, I sprawled the internet in search for something that would be worthy of a graduation present from me to me. As tempting as it may have been to opt for a new pair of shoes, upgrading my camera or perhaps even stepping up my watch game (I'm addicted), I had a eureka moment to blow all other thoughts out of the water. Explore.

Being a sucker for wanderlust, yet often being restricted by menial things, it was the ideal time. Knowing when my graduation was going to be - such events don't usually creep up on you - I had booked the week off holiday from Monday (the big day), all the way until I had to work again at 08:00 on the following Saturday. Well, that left Tuesday to Friday. The search begins.

Planning became simple hereon in:

1. Find the cheapest place to fly to.
2. Book a cheap and cheerful hostel.
3. Figure out the rest when there.

Copenhagen turned out to be the place to go. Return flights for £70, three nights in a hostel for £70, and an absolute haven for culture. There you have it, within two hours of having the thought, I had booked everything, found my passport, laughed at my passport photo, and Googled the hell out of where to visit (with little interest to do the standard touristy sights). Nothing left to do other than hope for the best.

Here came the second largest challenge. Packing. Being a menswear blogger and a fashion graduate, you can imagine that I'm not well versed in packing light. On the other hand, you can take the man out of university but not university out of the man; like hell was I willing to pay an extra £10 each way to bring a suitcase. Determined, I managed to fit four days worth of clothes, my wash bag, two cameras, iPad, mini-laptop and all other essentials into my Herschel Little America backpack, keeping it under 10kg (not that anyone checked).

After successfully making it over to Copenhagen, bearing the screaming toddler on the plane - seriously, he was screaming bloody murder and I could hear it through earplugs with my headphones over the top - I faced the largest challenge. Realising that my phone had no intention to work in Denmark, exactly when I needed it to be able to find my way to the hostel. Luckily, my iPad had changed over (and luckily I decided to take it with me), so the fix was obvious, right? Swap out the SIM cards... Easy? No. Curse modern technology and their strange obsession to make SIM cards on accessible with some kind of thin metal stick (Apple, I blame you for this).

Half an hour of stress passed, and I'm really not a stressful person so this is a big deal for me. Suddenly I remembered the pineapple pin I had on my jacket (long story, but thank you Ananas). It had saved the day/the trip, and I proceeded to the hostel, found my bunk, met an American named Eric, enjoyed one of the most delicious beers of my life (Carlsberg is actually good in Copenhagen), and then spent the next few days with Eric, Bianca and Braden, exploring one of my favourite places in the world.

Now, this is a little long, so I'm going to leave it here. The photos should say it all, and I may even elaborate on certain aspects within another post/maybe even a video if I ever get around to editing the reels of footage. The final note I will make is that all of these photographs were taken with my Minolta X-300 and Lomography Colour Negative 400 ISO film, partially so I didn't come back to a ton of editing, and partially to be able to use them for my other project (more to come on that at a later date). However, this does mean a drop in image quality, which I'm sure (hope) you will forgive me for.

Here is a selection of my favourite photos from the trip (minus the ones used to break up the text):
